A Biblioteca Democrática Escolar Digital José Martiniano de Alencar é uma iniciativa do professor Rodrigo Nóbrega Martins de resgatar a cultura dos clássicos da literatura brasileira através de um novo modelo de acesso, que é a leitura digital. Um dos pontos fortes de tal empreitada é que o aluno passa a possuir o livro, montando seu próprio acervo, e não somente tomá-lo emprestado na biblioteca escolar. Isto faz com que um número muito maior de alunos possam ler o livro ao mesmo tempo, já que as bibliotecas das escolas públicas vivem uma difícil realidade e não dispõem de um número grande de mesmos exemplares de uma mesma obra.
Mas as vantagens dessa modalidade de leitura vão além. O livro digital não se perde, não se estraga, não se rasga, além de ser ecologicamente correto, não sendo necessário o uso de matérias primas cuja renovação leva algum tempo. Os custos com distribuição não existem e os alunos podem carregar o livro no computador, no tablet, no celular...
Na construção de tal iniciativa, achamos justo homenagear o escritor cearense José de Alencar, que é ícone da literatura brasileira e orgulho do povo cearense por seus feitos em prol da cultura brasileira. Os livros disponíveis na Biblioteca Digital José Martiniano de Alencar são de domínio público ou estão disponíveis em open access ou copyleft.
