The animals found in the south eastern Australian State of Victoria are unique and diverse. Detailed descriptions of animals, maps of distribution, and endangered species status combine with stunning imagery and sounds to provide a valuable reference that can be used in urban, bush and coastal environments. The content has been developed by scientists at Museum Victoria, Australia’s largest public museum organisation.

The app holds descriptions of over 950 species encompassing birds, fishes, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals, freshwater, terrestrial and marine invertebrates, spiders, and insects including butterflies. From animals found in rockpools, minibeasts in your garden, to wildlife you might see in the bush. We’ve put in a lot of species, but it’s still a fraction of the complete fauna of Victoria. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time.

This app is one of a suite of field guides for each state and territory, developed by Australia’s leading natural history museums.

Pretty good on the whole, easy to find different species and identify them. There are sound clips missing for some common species though.

  2. Simbi-avatar

    Simbi

Great photos and easy to use .... but the ant genera are treated simplistically as "species". So you have no mention of a threatened species of Myrmecia. Also the mapping seems incorrect for some taxa. It almost seems the Victorian distribution data for many species is missing or limited.

  3. Zerandervax-avatar

    Zerandervax

Great app., learnt more about local wildlife. Thanks to everyone who put the info together. Be great if there was more information about lifecycle and lifespan. Be great if there was more flying siloette images for birds of prey.

Not working on Huawei Mate 20 Pro. When playing a sound, it either crashes completely or reverts back to main screen/ group species menu. App also crashes when manually selecting Update. The same bugs existed a few years back on Huawei phones but was later fixed.

  5. Beryl Dukes-avatar

Pretty good especially when compared to other State guides. But I wonder if it is being updated and if so how often? Still has good coverage of particularly the most commonly seen fauna.

  6. Jim Bo-avatar

Overall a good attempt at an app to educate budding naturalists. Well overdue for some updates though as getting buggy on Android 10 devices. Needs to expand its species list too.

Looks like nice app but the fact that it was last updated in 2016 is making me uninstall it as it obviously is not patched against the latest threats and vulnerabilities

  8. Quinno Brady-avatar

    Quinno Brady

Not always the right habbit like with the Red bellied black snake but the rest is great :-):-)

High quality introductory field guide for free from reliable source. Excellent for children and adults
