In the enchanted underwater City of Glass, what will you sacrifice for immortality? Love, memories, freedom? Will you take freedom from others to win your heart's desire? Dive into a world of mermaids, mermen, and other merfolk, where every character has secrets, and nothing is what it seems!

"The Sea Eternal" is an epic interactive fantasy novel by Lynnea Glasser, author of "Creatures Such as We" and "Coloratura," winner of the 2013 Interactive Fiction Competition and numerous XYZZY awards. Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--283,000 words, without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

The whales have granted the merfolk eternal life, and asked you for so little in return. Defense against the giant squid. Secrecy from humans. But when a rogue mermaid tries to destroy the gift of immortality, ancient secrets rise from the depths, and the delicate balance of society rests in your hands.

Will you fight to protect your immortality, or surrender it for a higher cause? Will you choose sides in the neverending war between the whales and the giant squid? Will your undying love save the City of Glass, or destroy it?

I feel cheated...it might not have been so bad if it had just been one of the free ones but this one costs money. The game doesn't allow for real choices, you are pushed to side with the humans even if you don't like them, pushed towards very specific ideologies, really, plus the story isn't developed enough to be intriguing. Many characters just felt in the way and the true lore is never explored. Utterly disappointing.

Maybe the book isn't my cup of tea, but I found that it can get a bit dull. The book has enough, even minimally, to keep going but not enough to fully engulf the reader and keep them invested and entertained. Note, I haven't read the rest of the book since anything after the first five chapters makes you pay. I don't think it's worth paying. And from other reviews, it just says the same.

The writing is evocative, even lovely in places, but that doesn't save The Sea Eternal from being mind numbingly dull. For a Choice Of game, it was bewilderingly devoid of agency while also being predictable and dense. I'll admit that I often felt very preached at during this experience. Diversity is what sold this game to me in the first place, and I was disappointed by how hamfisted and clumsy some of these very important issues were handled.

This could've been a very good game, if you were allowed any agency. (Spoiler Alert) Right from the start, there's some very unsubtle signs that the whales are supposed to be the bad guys. I would've liked the option of hearing their side of the story and coming to my own conclusions.

  5. Brett mcp-avatar

Slightly boring, but well written. However it is very short and has a horrible ending half with contradictions. Not worth purchasing even on sale. Only worth reading if it was ad supported or free.

  6. Kar En Tuk-avatar

I'm just disappointed with the fact there's only two romance options, and one of them I utterly dislike. Your choices also don't have much impact - you're pushed into siding with certain people rather quick. This is a let down, and it's a shame, since I always wanted a game where we play as merfolk...

  7. Yippie Gaming-avatar

Low entertainment value and basically shovelware for the writers political ideology and PC culture

I'll be brief and blunt. I only made it up to the point you met the other human (not the new human, the other one) and I was already bored. I didn't care about the characters we've met, not even the person you play as, to the point where I just... had to stop playing. Felt more like a chore then anything else. I can't recommend this. I'm sorry, I wish the author the best of luck with their writing.
