本活動自2010年起舉辦，原活動名稱為「金曲音樂週」，訴求對象為一般民眾，屬臺灣國內消費性展演活動；文化部影視及流行音樂產業局自2014年起將前揭活動轉型為產業媒合商展平台，並提升為國際級活動，更名為「金曲國際音樂節」，首度與金曲獎頒獎典禮合併辦理，期將金曲獎打造成為國際性活動與獎項為目標。 
金曲國際音樂節廣邀音樂產業鏈上、中、下游廠商及有意與音樂產業合作之跨產業類別參展，提供線上預約媒合系統，建構B2B之多元商業媒合平臺，俾利於增進商務洽談，活絡產業發展。
