Sky Map is a hand-held planetarium for your Android device. Use it to identify stars, planets, nebulae and more. Originally developed as Google Sky Map, it has now been donated and open sourced.
Make sure you haven't switched into manual mode. Does your phone have a compass? If not, Sky Map cannot tell your orientation. Look it up
 http:www.gsmarena.com
Try calibrating your compass by moving it in a figure of 8 motion or as described
 https:www.youtube.comwatch?v=k1EPbAapaeI.
Are there any magnets or metal nearby that might interfere with the compass?
Try switching off "magnetic correction" (in settings) and see if that is more accurate.
In Android 6 the way permissions work has changed. You need to enable the location permission setting for Sky Map as described

Try adjusting the sensor speed and damping (in settings). We have a better solution coming soon!
No, but some functions (like entering your location manually) won't work without one. You'll have to use the GPS or enter a latitude and longitude instead.

I remember this app working really well ages ago. Now, on my Cat s48c, it flickers and has incredible trouble detecting my compass even though it is set to high accuracy and the diagnostics window recognizes it. I disabled the gyro and that, at least, made automatic tracking sort of possible but the accuracy is so wonky that it wasn't until I used a telescope to find saturn that I was able to properly orient myself. A marvel of technology, sure, but a huge disappointment compared to what it was.

This is one of the most innovative apps that I have ever downloaded. Stargazing wouldn't be the same without it! The app receives your location, uses the phone's magnetometer to find to what celestial object you are pointing at, then learns how your phone is oriented from its gyroscope. All of the three technologies combined transform your phone into a window into the universe!

Not sure how to get a hold of the developers or if they even care but the sky map that i used to love is and has been out of alignment. There are other people saying same thing and its been like this for 2 months now. It shows the direction you point to but the planets and stars are in completely wrong location.

Really like this app. Seems accurate and easy to use. My biggest complaint is while you can zoom in on the different planets and stars, the font size that names the body does not increase. I can't find any setting to make the text bigger, and for some it can be very hard to read.

It seems as if the alignment of objects (stars and planets) with the display is not as good as it was before. For example, the relative position of Jupiter and Saturn is much closer on the display than in the sky. If there were more bright objects observable (say, camping away from the city lights), I would have a hard time matching stars in the sky with the display.

I show this to everyone. I love that this works without cellphone reception! So when I'm camping in the middle of nowhere I get to enjoy the stars and their names. I've shown this to so many people and they have all enjoyed it on their own phones.

Says i have no compass or any other sensors, when various toolkit apps work fine for compass tool. Manual location required because it wont read gps, but when i set it, it wont show the set location either as name or lat/long. Since it cant tell where i am or where its pointed its not very useful. It also makes the screen so bright (even at minimum phone brightness) when touched that you then cant see the sky afterward, making it totally pointless.

The position of stars and the moon are off by a significant amount, perhaps 45 degrees. Useful as a sky map but the auto positioning mode does not work. Yes, I did recalibrate the sensors a couple of times, and it did not help. Could be my phone's fault I suppose, but the GPS compass appears to point the right way.

This used to be one of my favorite apps. Whatever they've done to it in recent updates, though, have made it unusable. It's got the jitters. The display shakes constantly and only stops when put in manual mode. Please fix!

An invaluable reference tool for the amateur astronomer. Not 100% accurate all the time, but it doesn't have to be considering it is dealing with the great expanse that is outer space and can get you easily familiar with some of the big names in our chunk of the universe. Jupiter and Venus are some excellent targets to try to identify with this and the naked eye.
