Virginia Tech Tree Identification brings the award winning Virginia Tech digital dendrology material to your Android smart phone. It contains fact sheets for over 1000 woody plants from all over North America with an in-depth description, range map and thousands of color images of leaves, flowers, fruit, twigs, bark and form.
Users can narrow the species list for any location in North America using the phone's GPS, network signal or any entered address or zip code. Basically the application can become “Woody Plants of Where You Are Standing”. For example, it can become the “Woody Plants of Southwestern Oregon” , the “Woody Plants of Central Park” or the or “The Woody Plants of 37.108 lat., -80.452 long., elevation 2118”.
Users can further narrow the species list by answering a series of very simple tree attribute questions such as where the plant is growing, leaf shape, leaf arrangement, flower color or fruit type.
The species list can also be narrowed by typing a keyword such as oak, Abies, red or palm. For example if oak is typed only oaks found in the defined area will be listed.
A feature also allows you to send any tree related question to “Dr. Dendro”, a tree expert in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech. You can send a tree description or pictures of your plant and experts will help with identification.

What a great resource if I do not have a tree key with me which happens all the time. At first I thought the app was broken because once I got to the details of one spp I could not get back to the apps home screen. I finally realized if I just swipe to the left from the top of the screen it goes back. Now it all good.

I have *really* liked this app and have used it for years. I'd give 9 starts out of 5, except: 1) you can't zoom in on the photos--they're good but you can't access any detail (earlier versions, at least for iPhone, permitted this); and 2) I hate that they've made the photos the default view--this app is about information, not about pretty pictures. The current system is clunky and really gets in the way of the information.

I've been using this app as my go-to tree ID tool for about 5 years now and I absolutely love it! I've used it in the field, on casual strolls, and even hanging out with friends. I live in the northeastern US and have found this app to cover nearly all of the native and naturalized species found throughout New England. So don't let the "Virginia Tech" affiliation turn you away from giving this app a try if you're not actually *in* Virginia. ☺️🍁🍃🍂🌿

Was looking for a resource to supplement my identification books while in field. Better than most other tree ID apps. Huge selection, love that you can download for offline use. Only suggestion would be to add a "notes" feature in each of the plant selections. I would love a consolidated place to note location, ID tips that I've picked up for my region

I just downloaded this app so my review is based upon my seeing the trees that were included for the locations that I inquired on, ( which I am familiar with most species of these areas). I am very pleased with what I have seen so far and believe this to be a highly useful app if interested in learning about trees. Thank you!!

A bit cumbersome to use. If you're trying to id a tree, and don't get the final key choice right, you have to go back to the beginning every time. I finally uninstalled it when it couldn't find any species that fit my description

  7. Donald Frederick-avatar

    Donald Frederick

Prior version was fantastic, unfortunately it doesn't work anymore on my Samsung galaxy s8 after update in mid 2019. If it works on your phone, it contains a wealth of information.

  8. Cassie Cooper-avatar

    Cassie Cooper

Definitely should add a way to just favorite certain species because this is the most updated app and I've been using it for my dendrology class, but it is a pain to scroll through all the ones I'm not studying for.

  9. Bruce Pinn-avatar

    Bruce Pinn

I was looking for a book that would help me identify trees. Unfortunately, most of the books use illustrations to identify the trees. Not a great option. This app is a significant improvement.

This is a wonderful app with a huge amount of information, so of course it requires a lot of storage. It's worth it, but make sure you have a fast connection for download.
